New Enterprise Associates has closed one of the largest venture funds ever raised at $2.6 billion after a fundraising that uncovered “enormous interest in venture capital as an asset class,” said Peter Barris, the firm’s managing general partner.

At a time when the venture industry is consolidating and many lesser-known players struggle to raise fresh capital, NEA found that limited partners who turned away from venture during the financial crisis–when the firm raised its prior fund–are coming back, Barris said in an interview.
