NEW YORK--New York Life Capital Partners, which manages about $8.8 billion in private-equity assets on behalf of New York Life Insurance Co. and other institutional investors, said it has promoted Steven Benevento to the newly created position of chief investment officer, effective immediately.

Mr. Benevento, who had been serving as a senior managing principal, will oversee the firm's investment process and continue to report to New York Life Capital Partners Chief Executive Thomas Haubenstricker. He joined New York Life in 1995, initially managing a portfolio of private-equity, mezzanine and non-investment-grade debt investments within New York Life's Private Finance Group.

Prior to that, he worked in the investment group of TIAA-CREF, where he focused on debt and mezzanine investments in the private market. TIAA-CREF is a provider of retirement services in the academic, research, medical and cultural fields, managing almost $500 billion in assets. New York Life Capital Partners' private-equity assets include co-investment, mezzanine and fund-advisory programs.
