He arrived on the New York set of Ten Thousand Saints in his pyjamas on Tuesday.

But it wasn't long before Ethan Hawke was ready for action as he changed into his character's outfit of a denim jacket, jeans and brown boots.

The 43-year-old actor plays the estranged father of Asa Butterfield's character in the coming-of-age movie, which is set in the New York City punk scene during the Bush-Reagan era.

Ethan was clutching a sheaf of papers as he strolled along in his blue pyjamas and an oversized parka.

While his hair hung loosely around his face as he arrived, it had later been slicked back.

His UGG boots were swapped for heavy brown lace-up boots as he headed to the set.

And on Monday, as filming just started, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Emily Mortimer and Julianne Nicholson have joined the cast.

Mortimer is best known for her work on the HBO series The Newsroom and Nicholson recently starred in August: Osage County.

The Newsroom star will play a ballerina and the mother to Hailee Steinfeld's character.

She also stars as Hawke's girlfriend.

17-year-old Hailee was seen having fun on the set of the film adaptation of the 2012 Eleanor Henderson novel with co-stars Emile Hirsch and Butterfield on Tuesday.

Steinfeld, wearing the same outfit as Monday. looked perfectly dressed for the time period in a navy blue wool coat, over a knit sweater, cuffed light blue jeans, black military style boots, and a black knit beret.

Hirsch, 28, wore an oversized black coat, baggy green cargo pants, black military style boots, and had tattoos on his neck.

Butterfield, 16, looked the most plain of the trio in a grey puffer jacket, blue jeans, and black shoes.

The book follows a group of friends and lovers, parents and children, from 1987 to 2006, weaving through not only the neighbourhoods in New York, but also through the straight-edge punk scene and the AIDS epidemic.

Steinfeld plays a character named Eliza in the coming-of-age tale.

The film is being directed by Bob Pulcini and Shari Berman who are the pair behind the 2003 biographical comedy American Splendor starring Paul Giamatti.

Ten Thousand Saints is currently in production and will be released sometime in 2015.
