MANAGEMENT TEAM
Bernard H. Cherry, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Bud Cherry has consistently delivered management excellence and value in senior leadership positions in his 40 year career in the energy sector. Currently, in addition to his leadership of Energy 5.0, he serves as a Director of Northern Power Systems (NPS), a supplier of leading edge wind generation equipment and as a Director of Catalytic Solutions Inc (CSI), a supplier of advanced emission control systems.
Bud recently completed his tenure as Chief Executive Officer of Northern Power Systems after leading the successful reorganization of the NPS predecessor parent company, Distributed Energy Systems Inc (DESC). Bud served as CEO for these companies from late 2007 thru 2008. Bud was Chief Executive Officer of the Foster Wheeler Global Power Group (GPG) from 2002 until mid-2006. GPG provides a wide range of boiler equipment, goods and services to a broad spectrum of customers in power generation.
The group has a significant presence, including 4 manufacturing facilities, in North America, Europe and Asia and employs more than 2000 people worldwide. Bud joined Foster Wheeler Ltd. (FWLT) as part of the turnaround management team with responsibility for solving a broad range of complex and challenging issues in the Global Power Group which were significantly and adversely impacting the profitability and viability of the entire company.
He was successful in resolving these issues and in restructuring the group and restoring it to significant profitability. Bud's creative and tenacious leadership as CEO of GPG was instrumental in the survival of the company and was a critical aspect of the extraordinarily successful turnaround of Foster Wheeler Ltd. Prior to his tenure at Foster Wheeler, Mr. Cherry was a member of the senior management team of the Oxbow Group for 18 years. Bud was the President and Chief Operating Officer of the Oxbow Energy and Minerals Group and played a key leadership role in the creation and growth of Oxbow's global energy activities.
Bud joined Oxbow in 1985 with responsibility for power generation. Under Bud's management, Oxbow successfully developed, financed, constructed, operated and ultimately, profitably sold 7 power generation facilities located in the US, Asia and Latin America. Bud also consolidated and led the Oxbow trading and fuel production affiliates. Under his leadership, Oxbow succeeded in developing, financing and operating significant and successful underground coal mining and coal bed methane production ventures in western Colorado. These consolidated trading and fuel production businesses formed the foundation for Oxbow's continued profitable and successful expansion. From 1967 to 1985 Mr. Cherry served in positions of increasing responsibility at General Public Utilities Corp (GPU).
During his tenure as Vice President of Corporate Planning, Mr. Cherry successfully developed and managed the complex and innovative $1 Billion financing program for the cleanup of the Three Mile Island 2 Nuclear Facility. Mr. Cherry began his career as a Nuclear Engineer at United Nuclear Corporation (UNC) and holds a BS in Chemistry and MS in Nuclear Engineering, both earned at the University of Illinois.
Vincent P. Zodiaco,
President and Chief Operating Officer Vince Zodiaco has broad experience and many successes in the energy industry.
Educated as an engineer (BCE Villanova University and MS Pennsylvania State University) and a veteran of the Navy nuclear power program he has been successful in the regulated utility, independent power, coal mining, natural gas development and consulting sectors. Prior to joining Energy 5.0, Vince spent fourteen years with the Oxbow Group of Companies.
As President of Gunnison Energy Corporation (GEC), he precipitated the founding and managed the organization of that Colorado based natural gas exploration and development company as a diversification of Oxbow’s coal mining interests. GEC acquired an extensive natural gas lease position in the Peance Basin which it is currently proving and producing. Vince was President of Oxbow Mining Inc., owner and operator of two Colorado underground coal mines. The second of the two mines, the Elk Creek Mine designed and constructed during his tenure is currently one of the most successful and productive underground mines in the US.
Vince has substantial experience in renewable energy. From 1994 to 2002 he managed the operations and technical support (permitting, engineering, construction geologic), functions for Oxbow's seven independent power plants. Five of the facilities were geothermal generating plants the remaining two were fueled by natural gas. Three of the geothermal facilities were constructed under his direction. Vince managed and was responsible for the development, design and construction of the North Tonawanda Cogeneration Facility a 60 MW combined cycle project from it's inception as a green-field opportunity through construction to ultimate sale as a successful operating asset. At Oxbow Power Vince was also instrumental in wind power assessments and project initiation in Nevada, Kansas and Texas.
Prior to his association with Oxbow, Vince spent two years in a successful consulting practice; nine years working as a managing executive responsible for technical and financial planning and sales of two Pennsylvania coal companies for a subsidiary of Elf Aquitaine; and nine years working in positions of increasing responsible in nuclear operations and fuel supply functions for General Public Utilities Corporation.
Zachary A. Cherry,
Vice President of Finance Zachary A. Cherry joined the company as Vice President of Finance at the beginning of 2008. Zac brings more than ten years of comprehensive finance, investment and strategic advisory experience to Energy 5.0's executive team. Over the course of a decade on Wall Street, he has developed an acute proficiency in qualitative and quantitative analytics, negotiation as well as complex transaction structuring. In 1997, Mr.
Cherry began a successful career on Wall Street as a Financial Analyst in Salomon Brother's Investment Banking Division. He acquired both domestic and international, corporate finance and broad market experience, working in Salomon's New York and London Offices. In 1999 Cherry joined Neuberger Berman as an Equities Analyst. In his 6 years at Neuberger, Zachary ascended to Senior Lodging & Leisure Analyst, formulating proprietary investment ideas for recommendation to Neuberger's portfolio management team.
He went on to found Cherry Capital LLC, a boutique strategic and finance advisory firm facilitating financing, development and investment across an expansive array of industries. Cherry graduated from Brown University in May 1997 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Economics.
Gil A. Weisblum,
Director of Strategy Gil A. Weisblum joined the company as a financial consultant at the end of 2008. Gil brings experience and background in principal investing, finance and strategic advisory to Energy 5.0. Mr. Weisblum was most recently a Managing Director at JMB Capital, a global opportunistic hedge fund with over $1 billion in capital. From September 2002 through March 2006, Mr. Weisblum was a senior analyst at Mellon HBV Alternative Strategies, a multi-strategy hedge fund that managed over $1 billion in assets. At Mellon HBV, Mr. Weisblum was responsible for sourcing and evaluating event-driven and special situation investment opportunities. Before joining Mellon HBV, Mr.
Weisblum was an Associate at ACI Capital Co., Inc., an integrated investment firm that manages several investment vehicles on behalf of the Israel family and other institutional and high-net-worth investors. Previously, Mr. Weisblum was an Associate at Hoffman & Company, a private equity firm focused on consumer product companies. Prior to joining Hoffman & Company, Mr. Weisblum was an Analyst in the Financial Entrepreneurs Group within Salomon Smith Barney's Investment Banking Division.
Mr. Weisblum received a BS in Finance and Economics from New York University's Leonard N. Stern School of Business, graduating magna cum laude. Denny Nevard, Manager of Systems Development Denny Nevard worked extensively throughout Ontario for Hydro One, the utility which operates 95% of the province's transmission system. He has served in the line trade holding positions of Lineman, Lines Technician, Trades Instructor and Lines Supervisor for more than three decades. Mr. Nevard specializes in transmission power line routes and the associated engineering requirements for all facets of utility and developer construction.
He brings an encylopaedic knowledge of high voltage transmission systems and expertise in inspection of wind farm and solar sites relevant to design engineering as well as property and geographic characteristics. Nevard is instrumental in facilitating Energy 5.0's developments in Canada.
Maureen A. Bernacki,
Office Manager Maureen Bernacki has provided high-level support to executives holding positions of Chairman of the Board, President, and Chief Executive Officer and Executive Vice President for over 27 years. Ms. Bernacki has nearly 14 years experience working directly with the Founder and President of the Company. Specifically, in 1990 she began in the Power Generation industry at Oxbow Corporation as a Project Secretary for the North Tonawanda Cogeneration Facility, providing administrative support to Vince Zodiaco, the Project Manager; ultimately assisted the financing team and development group with preparation of project bids. In 1997 she was promoted to Executive Assistant to Bud Cherry and held that position until 2002.
ASSOCIATES
Martin Karpenski, Senior Business Consultant Marty Karpenski has worked with Foster Wheeler Corporation for over thirty years most recently as President and CEO of Foster Wheeler Power Systems, Inc. He also held various positions in the corporate law department and commercial divisions. Significantly he led the development of several large scale projects including the Petropower facility in Chile which consisted of a delayed coker and a coke fired cogen unit.
He has extensive experience in domestic and international large scale energy production, refinery and process facilities in the areas of project development, finance, operations and corporate management. Mr. Karpenski earned a BE Chemical Engineering from Villanova University; and a JD degree from Seton Hall University School of Law.
Jeffrey T. Whipple, P.E.
Senior Consulting Engineer Jeff Whipple has over thirty years of experience in the development, design and construction of large, complex, central station, electric power projects worldwide. He has been responsible for plants that use a wide range of fossil and waste fuels. He has been responsible for technology selection for all plant systems, the direct management of the complete engineering team, and project financial results. He has special expertise in a wide range of emissions control technologies and has been involved in several advanced CFB boiler based projects.
Currently in private consulting practice, his career spans 10 years at Foster Wheeler and 25 years at Burns and Roe and includes executive positions at both firms. Included among the long list of projects in which Mr. Whipple has played a major role are: the repowering of the JEA Northside 2 x 300 MWe Units, the repowering of the 135 MWe First Energy Bayshore Station and numerous combined cycle and air quality control system projects.
Mr. Whipple earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Columbia University, School of Engineering and Applied Science and an M.S. in Aerospace and Mechanical Science from Princeton University. Additional Resources Energy 5.0 has developed additional resources with consulting engineers and other professionals through the long experience of its principals and associates. These relationships assure the right level of resource and focus for each project.
