Sponsoring management instead of buying companies


Traditionally, private equity firms have engaged in the business of identifying and acquiring attractive operating companies that are expected to produce superior returns for investors. Recently, we have seen a trend of moving away from this traditional path and toward a different model where the private equity firm sponsors a battle-tested management team in a newly created operating platform. This strategy has developed in response to several market dynamics that are explored below but, in the end, is simply a new twist on an old theme for private equity sponsors: Identify strong management teams and put them in a position to succeed.
