SPOTLIGHT SHINING ON ENTERTAINMENT LAWYER Kessler, Hal "Corky"

Professional Bio
Corky joined DLE in 2010.  He has extensive experience in the entertainment industry on a worldwide basis. Corky regularly speaks on the business and legal aspects of feature film development, including tax incentives.  He has participated in seminars and conducted speaking engagements throughout the United States and Canada on legal issues impacting the entertainment industry. He has been a lead speaker for many years at various film festivals throughout the country, inlcuding the Sundance Film Festival, where he has conducted seminars on "Funding" and "Legal and Business Pitfalls, Screenplays through Distribution." Corky has been the attorney on numerous film projects across the country. He has represented and served as executive producer on feature films and theatre projects, including:
"The Sum of Us" starring Russell Crowe (winner of the Australian Academy Award for Best Film)
"Certifiably Jonathan" starring Jonathan Winters, Robin Williams, Howie Mandel, Rob Reiner, Nora Dunn, Jimmy Kimmel, Jim Carrey, Sara Silverman and others.
"Driving Miss Daisy" (A Joseph-Jefferson Winner)
"Frankie and Johnny in the Claire de Lune"
"Steel Magnolias"
"Shirley Valentine"
Corky is currently working on a film project entitled "Bloody Benders" to be directed by John Carpenter.
Corky teaches entertainment law as an Adjunct Professor at Northwestern Law School and John Marshall Law School. He previously developed a syllabus for and taught a similar course at Columbia College in its Film Department. He has also written articles for Screen Magazine and other film and entertainment periodicals.
He has successfully worked with governors and United States Congressmen in several states to implement new laws and federal tax incentives for investments in qualifying film and television projects, which led to Sections 181 and 199 of The American Jobs Creation Act of 2004 and its 2008 extension and amendment. Corky has also authored a reference book covering federal and state tax incentives for films.
